The Complete Guide to Obtaining your Truck Licence

Driving a truck makes you feel powerful! Nothing like having thousands of pounds of heavy machinery sitting under you like your cruise along the open roads. And, on top of that wonderful feeling, trucking is one of the more lucrative fields of employment in America. There are hundreds of well-paid transportation jobs currently in colorado and other states. Due to the long-haul nature of the job, and the health risks associated with all that sitting, trucking jobs often pay extremely well and come with a slew of health benefits attached such as full medical.

But you can’t just rock up and be handed the keys to a truck. You need a special license first. So we are going to explain to you how to get your trucking license so you can get on the open road ASAP.

Regular Licence

The first thing you need to do is to make sure you have your regular driving license. Even if you don’t plan to get or drive a regular car, this is the biggest caveat to securing your truck license. The state needs to make sure you have at least a basic understanding of the principles involved with driving and normal driving lessons are the best way to learn them.

It is cheaper. Learning to drive in a car is far less expensive than learning to drive a truck, so companies want to reduce the number of training hours you spend in a truck as much as possible.

Fill out the CDL

A CDL is a Commercial Drivers License. And its purpose is two-fold. Firstly, and most importantly, it allows you to drive a truck on the road without supervision from a trainer. Secondly, it allows you to actually transport commercial goods across the country. You can’t gain employment without one of these as it is illegal for anyone without one to transport a large amount of goods.

So you need to apply for one. The application process is extrmley simple. You just fill out the appropriate form and pay a small fee. Once you get approval you need to get a full medial check up to prove you are fit and healthy enough to handle long trips constantly. Then you move onto the test.

Passing the Test

There are a few different aspects to the training process. Firstly you need to pass a theoretical test, similar to your normal driving test. While this will cover the basic rules of the road, it also includes a lot of technical questions about the trucks themself. You need to be an engineer as much as a driver, so make sure you study.

Then you move onto the actual truck driivng training. You will be training for a while before you take the test. But if you pass you will be granted your CDL. After this point you will be able to apply for employment and before you know it you’ll be on the open road!
